Claude Makelele has signed a one-year extension to his current contract. It will keep the 34-year-old midfielder at Chelsea until 2009.
Makelele, the senior member of the squad, joined Chelsea in the summer of 2003 from Real Madrid.
He has been a key member of the success since, winning back-to-back Barclays Premiership titles in 2004 and 2005, two Carling Cup winners' medals and playing the whole of last May's extra-time FA Cup win over Manchester United.
His Chelsea career to date has included 183 appearances, two as substitute and two goals.
Young players produced by the Chelsea Academy continue to sign long-term deals with the news today (Monday) that Sam Hutchinson has signed a new four-year contract.
The deal follows on from Scott Sinclair signing a four-year contract last week.
Hutchinson, who turned 18 earlier this month, was part of the first team pre-season trip to the United States, having made his debut as a substitute against Everton at the end of last season, his one appearance so far.
Capable of playing at right-back or in central defence, the youngster has been spoken about by José Mourinho as a strong candidate to become a permanent member of the Chelsea first team picture.
