Arjen Robben has been formally presented in the Spanish capital as a Real Madrid player.
An announcement that Chelsea had reached agreement with the La Liga champions for his transfer was made at 10pm on Wednesday night, subject to the player agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.
The 36 million euro (£24.4 million) transfer fee that is being reported in Spain smashes the previous record transfer out of Stamford Bridge which was the £12 million Rangers paid for Tore Andre Flo in November 2000.
It also confirms chairman Bruce Buck's words on Thursday morning about the deal when he said: 'I think we got a very good business result there, we pretty much doubled our money in terms of the transfer fee three years ago.'
Robben joined Chelsea in the summer of 2004 from PSV Eindhoven for £12 million.
His start was hampered by injury suffered in pre-season but after making his debut in October 2004, he played a major part in the club's first successful championship challenge for 50 years, playing wide of a front three in an effective wing partnership with Damien Duff, even though further injury kept him out of action in the latter part of the campaign. He scored seven goals in 14+4 league games and was named Premiership Player for November 2004.
Robben collected his second Premiership winners' medal for the 2005/6 season, contributing six goals in the league campaign although two red cards and more injury reduced him 21+7 appearances.
Last season he made a major impact as a half-time substitute in both our cup final victories, crossing for Didier Drogba's winner against Arsenal in the Carling Cup Final and making a contribution at Wembley against Manchester United despite playing well short of peak condition.
In total he started 74 games for Chelsea with a further 31 sub appearances, scoring 19 goals.
Chelsea Football Club would like to thank Arjen for his contribution to our recent trophy success and wish him well for the future.
